I am trying to record LP's using Audacity version 1.3.13beta and 1.2.6. I do not get any sound out of the speakers when recording. I am using Windows 7 with a Soundblaster X-fi Extreme sound card and I get these same results with the onboard VIA sound card. I am using an Ion USB Turntable. The turbtable is connected to a USB port on the back of ny PC and the speakers are connected to the Line-In port on the sound card. I can see the Soundblaster sound card in the list of devices for playback and recording and that is what I choose for each device. The MME interface was being used and I tried the Windows DirectSound interface just for kicks but to no avail. I also have the "Software Playthrough" box checked. In the Volume Mixer in Windows, I have made sure that the "Listen To This Device" box is checked for the Line-In connection device. The settings on the recording and playback levels are properly set. I see both of the meters moving as they should when I click on record and the recording starts. I can hear the recordings on playback. I tried recording using a cassette player also and got the same results and I also replaced the USB cable which did not help either. I think I have mentioned everything. Please let me know what may be the problem.

Which speakers, the hifi speakers for the turntable? Or do you mean the computer speakers are connected to audio out (green) of the computer?

If you are connecting the hifi speakers to the line-in and using "listen to this device" that creates a potential conflict for software playthrough. Which playback device is "listen to this device" routed to?

I would either route "listen to" to the same device you have set as playback device in Audacity Preferences and turn Software Playthrough off; or disable "listen to" and turn Software Playthrough on.

If you want to hear the turntable through the computer without recording from it, enable Software Plauythrough *and* click in the Recording Meter in Meter Toolbar to turn on monitoring.

Then (if the problem isn't already fixed) you just have to decide whether that audio out belongs to the SoundBlaster or VIA onboard.

You need to follow the steps already given. Turn off "listen to this device" in Windows. Choose the "SoundBlaster" as the output device in Audacity's Device Toolbar then click the Transport menu and click on "Software Playthrough (on/off)" if that menu item does not have a checkmark against it.

If you cannot hear playthrough then reconnect your computer speakers to the audio out of the inbuilt device and change the Device Toolbar output device to the inbuilt device.

I was unable to hear playthrough so I reconnected the computer speakers to the audio out of the Soundblaster sound card. The only way I could get any activity in the recording was to use the Microsoft Sound Mapper or the Microphone as the recording device and the Soundblaster speakers as the playback. Everything seems to be ok except that the sound is distorted and I guess I need to reduce the record level.

If you are still recording LPs, the recording device for LPs is the Ion turntable. So in Audacity Device Toolbar make sure you are choosing "Microphone (USB Audio Codec)" as the input device and not some other microphone.

If "Microphone (USB Audio Codec)" is not listed in Audacity, try Transport > Rescan Audio Devices.

Now that the problem with the turntable is fixed, I need to get past the same problem with recording from a tape deck. No sound from a regular tape deck with RCA connections made at the deck and a connection to the line-in on the sound card. I can see both meters are moving but there is no sound. I have chosen "line-in" as the recording device and "Speakers 2 usb Audio CODEC" as the playback device.
