Issues with recording the third track

Hey, I've been recording some tunes that I've written and it's all starting to go wrong:
I imported 2 .wav files (one from Hydrogen Drum Machine and the other from Guitar Pro 5.2) for the drums and bass, and they're all nice and synced up.

My problem is that whenever I record, the output which is coming through my headphones is getting picked up by the microphone. As a result, playing back the track that I've just recorded has a quieter version of the drums and bass as well as the guitar I'm putting through the mic...

What's going on?
Is this likely to be an issue with the adaptor (6.3-3.5) I'm using to record with the mic?

Thanks for any help in advance!

Unless you have the playback extremely loud in your headphones I doubt that it "is getting picked up by the microphone".
I think what is more likely is that you have your sound card set to record from "Stereo Mix" rather than directly from the microphone.

On this page there is a description of how to set your sound card to record from "Stereo Mix" (which will then record all sounds that are playing on your computer). You want to do the opposite of this and set the recording source directly to your microphone input and not "Stereo Mix". http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Mixer ... trol_Panel
