I've been using audacity for several months. Our church records a sermon via cd recorder. I open it w/Audacity and then use Audacity to edit it. When finished i export it to a file. Everything sounds fine until I play the exported file. There's a slight hissing sound that accompanies the speaker and is most pronounced with words that start with "s." Any idea how to fix this? Thanks.

Sibilance and it's cause by sound damage somewhere in the process. "Sister Suzy" sound like drilling teeth?

What happens if you just plain play the CD on a CD player or even your computer into headphones? Say with Windows Media Player. Leave Audacity off.

Also, how are you getting the performance into Audacity? You can't just drag and drop from a Music CD. You have to rip the CD with a ripper such as CDex. Is it really a music CD? Does it play in your car?

What process makes the CD? Manufacturer and part numbers.

When finished editing it w/Audacity, i export it to a file. Whether I use itunes, windows media, or audacity it hisses

I start by ripping the audio from the cd with itunes. It sounds ok both on the itunes and Audacity. Then I open it w/Audacity and while editing the audio it sounds ok. It's only after I export it from Audacity to the file on my laptop that playback has the hiss

And precisely what format are you exporting to (file type and bitrate) ?

What happens if you just plain play the CD on your computer with Windows Media Player. Works OK with WMP and itunes

Also, how are you getting the performance into Audacity? I use itunes to rip it from the CD, then with Audacity import it to Audacity

Is it really a music CD? I am recording speaking not music

Does it play in your car? Haven't tried this

What process makes the CD? We record the sermon to a CD recorder - Tascam, CD-RW900 professional

44100 is not the "bit rate". That's the "sample rate".

If the bit rate is too low, the sound quality will suffer.
