Stereo recording from Vinyl LP

Hi Guys
I cannot get a stereo output in from a USB Beta 1.3 .13 connection (W7). All it picks up is the left hand channel.
The R/H remains dormant.
I've checked the forum & done everything that you have suggested except plugging in a stereo lead from H/phone socket to input socket on my desktop Mc. Which sort of defeats the object I think,
So your suggestions Please,
Thanks.

If you have then we've probably got nothing more to add.
The first thing that I would check is that the device is set to stereo in the Windows Control Panel:
http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/USB_t ... ista_and_7
If you look at the meter, it appears to be recording
something on the right channel, but looking at the waveform that "
something" looks like a bit of DC offset.
Could you try this test:
Click on the name of the track and select "Split Stereo Track" from the drop down menu
Then select part of the "silent" track and use the Amplify effect with "New Peak Amplitude" set to -6 dB.
Then post a screenshot.
Your first screenshot was informative, but too big to fit on the forum page, so for the screenshot -
Open "Screenshot tools" in the Help menu.
Click the "Resize Small" button, then adjust the Audacity window to show the tracks that we're interested in,
then click the "Capture Window Only" button.

Try this screen dump, the wave form is the left channel the right is the single line, I'm sorry I'm not Einstein but I cannot find in the drop downs that says "Split stereo track" so a pointer please, & if we can't get this thing to work then $150 worth of Junk from Bigpond!

You need to click on the track name.
On your image you would need to scroll up so that the top of the track is visible because the name is at the top of the box on the left end of the track.

Sorry, no magic lantern, but that test does give us some important information.
Audacity is recording something, albeit only a bit of noise and DC-offset, so that tells us that it's not a problem with Audacity. What we need to try and determine now is why Audacity is not receiving a proper audio signal on both channels.
Could you give a detailed description of your set-up.
What is the sound source?
What is the make/model of your USB sound card?
How is it all connected together?
Any other information that may be relevant?
Please make your description as detailed and precise as you can - we're probably trying to spot just one small detail that has been so far overlooked.

Looks increasingly as though it's the turntable, its ADC (soundcard) or its USB services that are at fault.
The first thing to check is the cartridge- are all four of the connectors on the back of the cartridge pressed fully home? Take care, these are delicate connections.
If your TT's manual is clear about which are the left and right pairs on the cartridge can you swap them over and see if the blank waveform moves to the top pair in Audacity (this would implyt a fault with the cartridge)?
Do you also have RCA analog connectors on your TT? If so can you connect the TT to a hi-fi amp or boom box and test to see if it is delivering sound through both channels? If so thsi would then poit at the ADC or the USB services or the USB cable to be at fault.
Just a thought - can you (gently) wiggle the USB plusg in its socket or replug to a different USB input on your computer (don't be tempted to use a USB hub) - does that make any difference?
I hope you kept the receipt for this device ...

I bought on Visa so I can get back to BigPond about it.
I have checked the connections only 3 are wired should all 4 be wired ?
Looking from the rear into the shell ... leads are, top left is white , top Right is Red, bottom left is black !
I can't remove the shell, there is a small screw on the underside of the shell but the arm won't go up high enough to remove it.
I have changed USB Ports & Leads no change & not a tight fit into the TT.
Checked TT manual but that doesn't give any tech info except to change the stylus & unfortunately don't have a boom box, have a 5.1 surround sound might see if I can connect to that.
Thanks, Grizzly

I would certainly have expected 4 leads to be connected (two for the L channel and two for the right); my cartridge has 4 and so have all the cartridges I have owned over the years.
I would check with the manufacturer (if they have a tech support helpline) on how many leads should be connected to the cartridge - but it's looking increasingly likely that this is your problem. Connecting to the 5.1 system should help you check this out.
