no sound on record off diamond xs5.1's stereo mix

I thought i finally had it after a complete reinstall of windows.. I'd discovered no stereo mix was on the list to record from, then found that in control panel you have to enable it under 'sound' icon... BUT;

NOW I still cannot make her work. Even though I hear the sound off youtube videos on speaker coming out of that soundcard, the audacity program refuses to record /hear sound off the stereo mix.
what is wrong?
I've tried chaning all preferences inside audacity I found.

Win 7 / Vista?

On XP it was usually a trivial matter to set this up, but often a lot of messing around on later Windows versions (and the settings vary from one machine to another )
