Failing to record from web sites - line and micro OK

I recently replaced the hard drive - previously could record sound from say, web radio. After reinstalled software (running XP service pack 3) and using audacity beta 1.3x. Visited all window set-up options but cannot get a recording. No more ideas - doing wrong something very obvious and simply - but cannot see for looking. Any help please.

Many thanks for responding - I have followed the guidelines but no success.
I do not get a response from the VU play meter.
I have checked out drivers - Dell uses a Soundmax card. I think they are up-to-date.
Any further suggestions would be appreciated.
I have a laptop and that works OK with the audacity so I guess it is down to drivers -

Are you saying that you cannot
see the blue sqiggly lines - see Waveform:
http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/Audacity_Waveform
Or are you saying that you cannot
hear what is playing?

I was unable to see a wave record. I have now renewed the drivers for the sound card by reinstalling from the installation disc and changed the version of audacity back to 1.2 and the sound 'woke up' -
problem solved.
Many thanks to the forum for the support and directing me to look at certain features initially.

I suspect that is what fixed it. You will probably be able to run Audacity 1.3.13 successfully now. If you want to try it, you don't need to uninstall Audacity 1.2.6 as both versions may be installed on the same machine at the same time (though you can't run them both simultaneously).
