Windows 7: Unable to export files as .mp3

I am using Windows 7.

I was going to export my files to .mp3 but it asks me to install LAME.
After installing LAME, I still cannot export to .mp3, while the exported file is somekind of "unknown type" file which has no file extensions.
I follow the instructions on the page : http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/FAQ: ... d_Plug-Ins, but still the problem has not been solved. I even cannot find out the "audacity.cfg" from my AppData folder, not even a "Audacity" folder inside it.

Please help.

If you have not seen a message about "cannot open LAME encoding library", then you can assume LAME has been installed correctly.

By default, Windows hides extensions for known file types like MP3.

What application says the exported MP3 is of unknown type - does that application refuse to play it? Does Audacity play it if you drag the file back into it? Audacity exports by default at 44100 Hz ("project rate" bottom left) and exports MP3s by default at 128 kbps bit rate (click the "Options" button in the "Export File" window when exporting as MP3). You may want to check those parameters and the parameters that your player will accept.

Also note that if you are adding dots into the file name when you export, the file will be saved with an extension corresponding to the characters after the last dot and Audacity will warn you of this. In that case you must add the MP3 extension yourself.

Audacity.cfg will not exist until you have exited Audacity cleanly the first time.

In order to see audacity.cfg on Windows, you need to show hidden files and folders .
