Error while opening sound device

Hi,
I can record my first track, but when I try to record any subsequent tracks, I get the "Error while opening sound device" message.
I am running WinXP and using a Gina 24 sound card.
If I save the project, then reboot, it will let me record a second track, but this is extremely time consuming. If you have any ideas, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I am not sure of the significance of rebooting, unless this resets the "Gina" card.
I assume you are recording while playing back the first track - if so, does the problem go away if you turn off Transport > Overdub in Audacity?
I would suggest you try all the tips here:

I tried this no luck. I should add, that I only get one shot at recording. If I quit Audacity and start a new project, it still won't work. If I change inputs (I have 1 pair analog, and 3 pair digital with the Gina) each input will work once. I have also tried different bit rates with no luck.
thanks for your response.

Matching sample rates is one of the possible issues - are you sure you have tried everything in the link I gave:
http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Troub ... ings#drift ?
If that doesn't help then the only other possibilities are to do with the drivers in use for the Gina and the version of Audacity you have (see Audacity > About Audacity). If you don't already have the current 1.3.13 Beta, please upgrade:
http://audacity.googlecode.com/files/au ... 1.3.13.exe
The Gina seems now to be discontinued. I would suggest you ask Echo Audio support whether you have the latest or most appropriate drivers for it:
http://echoaudio.com/Support/Contact.php
If there is any control panel for Gina that chooses drivers, choose WDM. It's also possible these are all issues that would go away if you used the device's ASIO drivers, but to use those in Audacity you would have to compile Audacity yourself (and agree not to distribute that build to anyone else).

I am also having the same problem as Davonds. I am using Audacity 1.2.6 & Audacity 1.3.12beta. These are both on the same laptop which is using Windows Vista (home edition). I have been using these for some time wwithout trouble (months). Two days ago I started having the exact same problem. I am not a computer person, but I use Audacity to modify music to use in my P2E slide shows. I think the problem is some thing other than the sound card. I'm willing to provide info if it may help, but I would probably need help in finding what you may ask. Scotia

Have you tried all of the suggestions already given in this thread?

Tried several more times and then downloaded "1.3.13beta and it worked on the first try. However, it reverted to the origonal problem when I tried to modify a piece of music I'd worked on using the previous "beta". I un-installed the two origonal versions and the "1.3.13". I again downloaded "1.3.13beta" and all seems to be fine now. Thanks Scotia.

If the project rate (bottom left of the Audacity window) or the track rate (above the Mute / Solo buttons) was different for the project you had previously worked on, this could be an explanation. Most sound devices will work at 44100 Hz, but ones where the drivers are not correct may give errors if other rates are used. If the problem comes back I would look at this page and see if you have the most appropriate drivers for your sound device:
http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Updat ... ce_Drivers
If you need more help please say whether you are on Windows 7 or what version of Windows it is, and what sound device you are using. Is the error during recording or playback? If you are recording, what are you recording (for example, microphone connected to pink mic port of computer).
