Win7x64 SP1 install stops stereo mix

Post by cab1977 » Tue Jul 26, 2011 9:37 pm

1.3.13 had been running fine (many months) on my Windows 7 64-bit system. Installing the newly released SP1 "killed" my stereo mix recording ability. Using realtek high definition audio driver 6.0.1.6316. Stereo mix is enabled and set as my default recording device. It shows up fine within the audacity preferences....yet I get a flat line upon selecting the record button. Reinstalling both audacity and sound drivers has not helped. Perhaps this is a bug or perhaps not....? I welcome any advice....As mentioned earlier I did not have any problems until immediately after the SP1 update a couple of weeks ago.

After installing SP1 it appears that it is often necessary to go into the Windows Control Panel and re-enable Stereo Mix.
Information on this page should help: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Mixer ... trol_Panel

You are absolutely right...Installing the service pak does require you to re-enable stereo mix under the sound recording settings which I did as mentioned in my first post (stereo mix is enabled). There has to be something else going on or perhaps another setting somewhere I haven't discovered yet.

I was finally able to get stereo mix working again by switching my "playback" from USB-headset to external speakers connected directly to the computer sound jack. I did not realize that the "playback" option also had an affect on the recording since I certainly had no problems hearing any "windows sounds" through the headset. Now if I can figure out how to get Audacity to record when I have my default playback set to USB-Headset rather than external speaker jack I should be back to where I was before the SP1 update. Before the update I had both the external speakers and the headphones working with the USB headset set as default.

USB devices do not support "stereo Mix" recording (at least, I've never seen a USB audio device that supports "Stereo Mix" recording on Windows).
