Edit tool problem

I hope someone can help me. When I use the select tool (I) to make an edit I get a shaded block that will only allow me to cut or edit the audio section in the block. I used to be able to make large or small edits by highlighting a section, but now I can only use a shaded block. Did I accidentally set something up I can't undo? There are two light colored arrows about the track that seem to be connected. But I can't undo this unwanted feature. I hope someone can help me figure this out. Thank you for your help. -kac

If you mean that you can only select exact seconds, look near the bottom of the main Audacity window and deselect "Snap To".
