Can't copy/paste sometimes?

There are certain instances in which I can't copy or paste anything, even though I have something selected and/or in the clipboard. The particular circumstances in which this occurs aren't entirely clear to me. Why is this happening? Is there a ceritain amount of time I have to have selected to copy? And why can't I paste?
