Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

how do others record cassette tapes?

Post by sandy431 » Sun Jul 17, 2011 10:37 pm

Trying to record cassette music tapes to Cd's.

My previous posts said I used different cassette tape Players (devices) to record From. Constant problems of ticking, humming or other noise while recording. Any Audacity settings I change don't help. I'm Not blaming Audacity for the problems. It's the equipment or something else causing problems.

I would like Device info. Meaning what external device or type of thing is being used to Record From? I've tried what they call Boomboxes (at least 3 different ones, walkmans, etc..) I have also changed input/out stereo wires from computer to cassette player. I'm confident the wiring is set properly for Boomboxes, cassette players, etc..

Has anyone heard @ this or tried it.?
[url][http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications ... CECjCE/url] Don't like the idea of it using a USB port.

Please lets have others share what they are using or if have used/seen the above device. At this point I can't record any cassette tapes. These cassette tapes were ones I bought at one time and produced professionally like Moody Blues, Cher, Electric Light Orchestra. These are Not remakes. The originals. Don't think I can blame the tapes.

Appreciate opinions

I use a Technics RS-BX646 Cassette Deck:

plugged into a Behringer UCA 202 USB sound card.

Most Macs have a Stereo Line-In and don't need the UCA202, above. This is me recording a voice track with a small field mixer.

I could have recorded this on a Windows laptop by sliding a UCA202 between the mixer and the computer. It doesn't have to be a sound mixer, either, it could be anything with a High Level, Stereo Line-Out like this...

Similar to Steve, I use my trusty old Nakamichi BX-2 connected to my PC through and Edirol UA-1EX external soundcard.

This produced excellent results, but note this Nak was the deck on which most of my tapes were recorded originally, I was using TDK-SA tapes (and the deck was especially set up for that tape) - and I did have it professionally serviced before I undertook the digitization project.

Make sure tha you clean the transport mechanism of the tape deck, the capstan and the pinch-roller, but don't use alcohol based solvents on rubbery parts. Also rewind the tape from end to end and back again before recording to even the tension in the tape (it may have ben stored unused for a long time).
