Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

what you hear recording

In my XP version I have the capability to record "what you hear" as a source. In the Windows 7 version, there is only the microphone and mme choices.
Can I install the XP version on my 7 machine to get the "what you hear" source for recording? :?

The difference is nothing to do with Audacity - it's due to a difference between XP and Win 7.
Audacity 1.3.13 is recommended for both XP and Win 7. This version is essential for Win 7. http://audacityteam.org/download/

Sometimes "what you hear recording" (AKA "Stereo Mix") is not available in Win 7, and sometimes it is available but disabled and hidden.
See here how to enable it (if it is available on your computer) http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Mixer ... trol_Panel

On my wife's new W7 laptop there was no way to record what was playing on the computer with Audacity - the option was totally missin, not even hidden asSteve says is sometimes is.

Her workaround was to shell ot $17.95 for a copy of ToltalRecorder which works a treat - see: http://www.highcriteria.com/
She basically records in TR and thenm imports the audio file into Audacity for further processing.

There is also free-ware available on t'interweb for download - but personally I would rather pay a little for s/w like this to avoid having the annoying ads that get served with free-ware.
