Overdub have already checked but no bg music while recording

i am new at audacity and don't understand difficult hardware and software words
i've read wiki and previous post which contain similar problems and not yet received the solution

Problem : when recording my own voice on top of the music ,the previous track (the music that i was input) can't be heard

o.s is windows xp , i use audacity 1.3 beta, for input and output i use headphones that has a microphone attached to it
In the Mixer Toolbar i set the volume levels of my audio device to the max
The green bar shows when i was recording and the red bar shows too
In the device toolbar i already adjusted to my headphones devices
overdub already checked in the preferences menu

i once success heard the background music when recorded my voices , by clicking the sync-lock tracks
but when i record again (using same file) even i click the sync-lock tracks, the music again can't be heard
i also tried not using the sync-lock track , again the same result music can't be heard when recorded

i want to listen to the music when i record my own voices

if anyone can help, please help

Can you hear the recording when you press "Play"?

yes, i heard it just fine both tracks are played
also when i accidentally heard the music when i recorded my own voice,
i press stop button and play it, both music and voice are clearly heard.
then i record again the previous track can't be heard again.
and of course i don't press the mute and solo button

is it having 2 audacity software in my laptop effecting this? i installed 1.2 and 1.3

That shouldn't be a problem.

Does the problem occur with both versions of Audacity? (I'm guessing "yes").

The problem seems to be that your sound card is happy to record, or to playback, but not happy about doing both at the same time (duplex).
