wav invalid format?

Hello
I used to be able to record songs, save them in mp3 format, convert the file to wav format (under XP Pro OS), and then open the .wav file in another program. Now, under Windows 7, I can record, but can't open/play any new files I save in .wav format. However, I can still open/play the old .wav files I recorded/saved under XP Pro. I get an error message that the wav output device is having trouble (
) playing invalid .wav format. I have tried saving an mp3 file in .wav format with Audacity and with Adobe Audition - same problem with both programs. Any ideas? Thank you.
