Playback volume mysteriously disappears

I'm using Audacity 1.3.13 beta. Imported some tracks - fine. Recorded some extra guitar tracks on top - fine. Played back - fine. Saved project - fine. Reopened project - fine.
When I reopen the project the second or third time suddenly the guitar tracks I recorded with a line in cable are now super low volume. They were fine in the first session or two but now are low volume. No changes have been made, no effects added.

This happens EVERY time I use Audacity now. First time out the gate works like a dream with low latency then I reopen it and the recording's gone down the tubes.

Anyone got any ideas ? Someone please tell me there's a simple user malfunction happening here.

Audacity gets blamed a lot for Windows System problems.

WinVista or Win7?

Do you like recording YouTube video sound from the internet?

Make sure you don't have Stereo-Mix, Mix-Out, or any of the other odd recording settings in Windows Control Panels. Recursive sound pathways are responsible for any number of odd sound problems.

The other magic thing that newer Windows machines do is set you up for internet voice conferencing whether you need it or not. That features things like auto echo cancellation and automatic volume control and background suppression. If Windows thinks your guitar solo is "air conditioning noise," it will try to suppress it from the rest of the show.
