I have only 35 min in a recording; I clicked "save" and after that the "save" option was grayed out. That means I cannot add to the recording. What should I do?
BTW, I am not a techie.

Fill out the show a little. You used Append Record so your show got longer and now you want to save the new, longer show? Are you trying to add a completely new piece and timeline to the older show? Describe exactly what you're doing. It's difficult to give us too much information and background.
You can always Export a WAV file if you can't get anything else to work. That will preserve the high quality of the work until we figure out anything else. You know Audacity will not save a sound file, right? To get a sound file you can email to your mom, you have to Export one.
Sometimes the buttons turn prematurely gray if you fail to press STOP at the end of your work.
Can you Save As: instead of Save:?

Save is also usually disabled if Audacity detects that you have not made any editing changes since the last save (the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+S always appears to work though0. AAnd as Koz says yu shoul;d be able to force the save witha Save As ...

Thank you, waxcylindar. You are right. I went to sleep worrying about it and thought, well, maybe it just disabled because I had nothing new to save, so in the morning, I started to work as usual, and sure enough, it did save. Whew! Thanks again, everyone for trying to help a newbie

Glad we got you sorted.
Personally I have never figured out why the developers ever went to the bother of greying out the "Save" command until editing changes have been made - it's only more programming and thus more "stuff" that can go wrong. And what's more it confuses newbie users
( you're not the first and you won't be the last DrDeb
)
Personally even as a reasonably knowledgeable user I find it irritating that it behaves this way.
