Ensure that you have the latest version of Audacity 1.3 (currently 1.3.13).
The M-Audio fast track interface must be connected to the computer, powered up and recognised by Windows before you launch Audacity.
Open Audacity and in "Edit menu > Preferences > Devices" ensure that the USB option is selected for the Recording device. (Set the Playback device to whatever playback device you are using).

Thank you for your response, goter up and running! However, the one thing is when I try to playback a recording the speakers will not work unless i unplug the interface. Is there any way around this? Again, thanks for your help

Open Audacity and in "Edit menu > Preferences > Devices". Ensure that the "Playback" device is set to the sound card that you are using for playback.
