Hi, love Audacity, however......my input and output levels are set on -24 and i cannot change them.....need to bring down the input level! Getting a lot of hiss on the track!
Where can i adjust them please? The sliders have no effect! Nothing in preferences to do this either!
Windows 7 premium home
Audacity 1.3.1.3.0 beta......on a previous computer my levels were set at -18......didn't get the hiss when i was set on -18

Audacity is a complete slave to what the computer is doing. Open up the Windows Control Panels > Audio and see if you can set levels there. Some USB sound devices will not let you set sound level.

We don't know where your sound is coming from.

Also, Windows has separate recording & playback "mixers". (Sorry, I'm not on Windows 7 right now, and I don't remember how to access the mixers.)

What's your source?
Are you connected to mic-in, or line-in?
I assume you are recording, right?

The mic input on most soundcards/soundchips is low-quality (i.e. hiss). And, and if you are connecting a line-level source to your mic-in, you are probably overloading it (i.e. distortion).
