Radio Effect for the Beta

Post by mmzavp » Sun Jun 19, 2011 9:11 pm

I've looked all over the place and couldn't find anything remotely close to what Im looking for except for tutorials on versions that are far outdated. Can someone help me trying to figure out how to use the robust distortion and create a comm. effect?

Try using a combination of the Leveller effect (to create distortion) and the Equalization effect (possibly the AM Radio preset) to limit the bandwidth.

Leveler is good with this because it's a brute-force limiter (not compressor) similar to processing in 2-way radios. You might need to apply it multiple times to get the proper squashing. Also try the telephone filter on top of that. High Pass at 300 and low pass at 3000 if you're not up to rolling your own with the equalizer tool.

I had a bad sample posted, but I can't find it.

We also note that theatrical presentation has a lot to do with it. Air Traffic Controllers have a swing and cadence different from somebody messing around on a construction site and different again from a cab dispatcher.

I'm slowly remembering this. I was using a Radio Shack 3013 and I got really close to the microphone. That helped with the dense, presence sound even before I squashed it.

The test I did with the USB headset would be good, too. That naturally has a high, dense sound.
