Hi all,

Im having a problem with recording from Stereo Mix and hoping you can help.

Basically, my set up is: I use Ableton and Beatcraft to write song parts and then record them onto Audacity.

When i record, the sound always fades in. For example, if im recording a pumping bassline (similar to something like My Iron Lung by Radiohead as an example) every note fades in. This also means that longer notes end up going alot louder than the rest.

Ive pasted a screenshot of what i mean. It could well be a simple fix but im new to all this so a bit lost

Vista and Win7 can have audio conferencing services on as default. Auto Echo Cancellation, Room Noise Suppression, and Auto Gain Control are a good thing when you voice Skype your business report to the head office, but they make hash out of live musical recording.

You can go into Windows Control Panels and make sure anything labeled "auto" is turned off. This isn't an Audacity problem. Audacity doesn't do anything in real time except record, play and some timer functions.

What are you using for a microphone?

Cheers for the reply. I did notice last night when i downloaded a trial version of a different program to test it that the same thing happened so musn't be Audacity that's causing it. Also it happens when im recording audio from Beatcraft and Ableton so it must be something general with the computer. I actually use Windows XP by the way, forgot to mention that. Im not actually using a microphone either. Im recording directly from the two programs above using "Stereo Mix". I actually just checked with a cheap computer mic i have here and it doesnt seem to happen when recording through that.

I know this isnt directly Audacity related but if you have any ideas i would be very grateful. Its doing my head in!

It's a long shot, but check that "Software Playthrough" is not selected (near the bottom of the Transport menu).

Naw, thats not selected. Its deffo not a setting on Audacity as i tried a different program and the same happened so it has to be a setting elsewhere but no idea where.

Sound devices on XP can have effects too, though they are not usually integrated into "Sounds and Audio Devices" (the Windows Control Panel applet for system sound).

You should definitely go into the Control Panel and see if the sound device has its own control panel, or right-click over any speaker icons in the System Tray (where the clock is).

Otherwise, investigate if you have correct drivers for the sound device (made by the maker of the motherboard or maker of the device):

Hi first check overdub is unticked. If it's not that, chek this. If you just recorded something make sure fade in is not activated in the effect menu.

Fade is not a real time effect. Like all effects in Audacity it is only applied when you specifically select some audio and apply the effect. I don't imagine that Logikal would have applied an effect multiple times without noticing that he was doing so.

Im using an updated driver from the original so should be the right drivers. Will try fully uninstalling the card and reinstalling the original drivers as that hadnt crossed my mind. Have to run out for a gig now so wont be able to do it until tomorrow but thanks for the tip. Fingers crossed!
