Have you checked the computer manufacturers web site, or are you relying on Windows update telling you that they are up to date?

You say that everything was previously working fine on this machine?

Try resetting the Audacity Preferences, just in case something has got messed up in there.

Well, not everything, but Audacity was giving me no hassle.

Do other programs playback OK?
If they do, then go to "Edit menu > Preferences > Devices" and set the Playback device to "Microsoft Soundmapper - Output"

After another Windows crash last night and automatic resetting to previous state Audacity is back to normal. Many thanks for the support in trying to locate the source of the trouble. (Still don't know what the cause was.)
