Locating Current Version of Audacity

Hi, I have recently registered with this form which makes me a noob and I wish to extend my greetings. I came across Audacity some time ago, maybe a year, and have procrastinated with the installation. To make a long story short, I am now a little confused as to what is the current version of Audacity. The reason I ask is that over this delayed time period I have downloaded install files called "Audacity_40.exe", and "audacity-win-1.2.6.exe". Both were downloaded when Windows XP Pro was on my computer. Windows 7 is now my OS. I need to know which of the install files fit my needs. Also, during my search for information about the version issue I have come across references, in this forum, to versions of Audacity 1.3.x, 1.4.

If you give any detailed operation of Audacity, be sure to use the current version of Audacity 1.3.x in your toots. Audacity 1.4 will take over from 1.2.6 as the next "stable" release, and 1.4.0 will be based on 1.3.x
To stay up to date on detailed operation and any features that will be added or dropped before the release of 1.4, keep an eye on the Audacity wiki (link at top of page).

Of course this quote occurred back on Sep 24, 2008 and the "Audacity wiki (link at top of page)", statement does not appear on this forums window. It got me thinking that maybe I am lagging way behind and the forum format I am now viewing has changed and dose not reference this "wiki link". If someone could please direct me to a download page for the current Audacity program that Windows 7 x64 will support I would appreciate it very much.

The official download site for Audacity is this: http://audacityteam.org/download/

The recommended version for Windows 7 is 1.3.13, which you can get from here: http://audacityteam.org/download/beta_windows
(or follow the link on the main download page)

Back in 2008 the idea was that the next non-beta version of Audacity was going to be Audacity 1.4.
Several beta releases later it was decided that the beta versions had moved on so far from the old 1.2.x series that it would be more appropriate to call the next non-beta version "Audacity 2.0". We're still not (quite) there yet, but the current beta version (1.3.13) is very close. Audacity 1.3.13 is the best release so far (though 1.3.14 looks like it will surpass it). These last few beta versions before Audacity 2.0 are mostly about rigorous field testing so that when 2.0 is released it will be something that everyone involved can be proud of.

The best current release version is Audacity 1.3.13 (see link in the post from bgravato).

"Audacity_40.exe" has nothing to do with Audacity. "Audacity_40.exe" is a virus.

Audacity should be downloaded from the official download sources.

There is no explicitly 64-bit version of Audacity. It is a 32-bit application but will work on 64-bit Windows just like other applications which are only 32-bit.

1.3.13 is a very mature Beta and is generally preferable to 1.2.6 on Windows Vista and 7. We no longer officially support 1.2.6 on those versions of Windows because 1.2.6 can crash when you stop recording (this only started happening with Vista Service Pack 1, but we haven't released a new "stable" 1.2 version since then).

Thank you Gale for that information. You answered the question I posed to steve and I appreciate the quick response from you, but I went to the link provided by bgravato immediately after typing the post you read and learned the same thing you advised me. Realizing the question I left for steve to answer was now moot I went back and edited my post. Your post was not visible at that time and I had hoped that I was able to edit my post before anyone was able to read it. I apologize for not having my brain in gear before opening my mouth. Your post, as every post, is important as well as informative and now may help future seekers of information. Thank you.
