Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.
The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Re: Stereo Mix not an option
What you get on a particular machine is entirely dependent on the soundcard and its associated driver sofftware. Sometimes you can improve this by installing the latest drivers (search t'interweb for these).
There is a rumour that DEll is crippling this on many of its machines - bt my recently purchased Dell laptop with a Realtek HD card works fine in this mode.

I have a similar problem. I can convert stereo to mono, but then any attempt to export to an mp3 causes a crash.

You probably don't. Stereo Mix in this case is the computer's ability to see its own output. It has nothing to do with Stereo exporting, so with an eye to keeping this thread from getting complicated beyond all reason, can you please start an new question?
Thanx,
Koz

Yes, but not when you bought it, but when was it designed? Does it have start of the art, cutting edge technology? A big hard drive doesn't count. I bought a Mac laptop just before they went off the market. It was new to me.
The Windows folks are also struggling with Vista which hides that services behind some right-clicks in magic places.
They really don't want you recording this stuff.
