my select tool worked the first time I used Audacity, but has not worked since. I use Audacity for story audio, not music. When I want to select a dead section to delete the select tool does not work.

Are you deleting short selections less than a second? If so make sure you have not got "Snap To" checked in Selection Toolbar at the bottom.

If that is not the issue, please give more details on how selections are not working.

Thank you Gail, the 'snap to' box was the problem.
