group edit problems

Hi all

I’ve been using Audacity 1.2 to group edit 59 TomTom .ogg voice files very successfully.
Yesterday I upgraded to 1.3.13 beta and found the following problem.

(1) I wanted to group edit all 59 files though the Hi pass filter, I loaded all of the files then Ctrl A to select them all, the programme selected all of the files but added silence to all the shorter files to make them all the same length as the longest file.

I have had no such problems with ver 1.2 but I think the Hi pass filter in ver 1.3 gives better results.

I'm Running Windows 7

You have two option:

1) Quick and easy option. After running the filter, use "Edit menu > Clip Boundaries > Detach at Silences"
If you use this a lot, there is a keyboard shortcut "Alt+Ctrl+J".

2) The more powerful method. Use "Chain" commands to process the files.

Hi Steve

your suggestions dont seem to work for me ???
maybe we are talking a cross purposes my files look like below:-

when files are loaded they are not joined into a long file they look like the example below

F=File S=silence

ffffffffffffffffffff
ffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff
ffffffffff
fffffffffffffffffffffffff
and so on down to 59

after group sellection
They look like this

ffffffffffffffffffffssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss
ffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff
fffffffffffssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss
fffffffffffffffffffffffffssssssssssssssssssssssssssss
and so on down to 59

On ver 1.2 I dont get the silence added to all the files

Select all, then Detach at Silences.
That should remove all of the SSSSSS

Hi Steve

Sorry steve but it doesn't work for me, select all + detach at silences or Ctrl + Alt + J selects all of every file including the silence.

Are your audio tracks in a low bit-depth format (for example 16-bit)? By default Audacity uses 32-bit float for audio, but if your tracks are in a lower "resolution" the the "silence" will not be absolute silence and Alt+Ctrl+J won't work.

If this is the case then it may be easier to use "Chains" to process your files. This is actually the better way to do it anyway as you can just set it up, press OK and come back later when it's finished. (see links in my previous post).
