Probably best to reset your preferences back to the default values before proceeding. See here for how to do that: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Audac ... tored.3F_2

When you have done that, set the recording and playback devices to whatever you are using (Edit menu > Preferences > Devices) and try again.
If you still get the problem, don't make any other changes, just write back and give full details about the version of Audacity, your operating system, what you are recording from, what sound card you are using and any other details that may be relevant.

Have you got your Windows Explorer set so that it doesn't show hidden files and folders - and note this is the somewhat unhelpful default that Microsoft ships in Windows?

If so reset it is to show the hidden files/folders - I suspect the .cfg file may be such a file.

Time for a cup of tea (or coffee).

What are you trying to record from?
Please give full details of your set-up (too much information is better than not enough).
