audacity stops working when trying to record

Post by monelle » Wed Jun 01, 2011 11:46 pm

Audacity works fine, except that within a few second after I start recording, I get the message: "audacity.exe has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." I am using Windows 7. I see that lame_enc.dll is installed 4 times on my desktop, including in C:Windows]System32.

Which exact version of Audacity are you using? (look in "Help menu > About Audacity")

What are you trying to record from?

I was trying to use 1.2.6, and recording from a microphone. I have since uninstalled it and installed the Beta 1.3.13. The first time, I was able to record a couple of tracks with no problem. After that, the program takes 90 seconds to open. As soon as I click on Edit, Preferences, Recording and click on the box next to "Overdub: Play other tracks while recording new one," the program freezes and I have to use the task manager to shut it down. Thanks for any help!

Update ... finally got the program to accept the Settings change, it just seems to be working super slowly. Opening still takes about 90 seconds. Also, when I record 2 tracks, they are not synchronized, even though I could hear the first one while recording the second one. They are 1 or 2 seconds off. Yikes. Help! :)

Regarding slowliness try disabling the plugins in Preferences -> Effects. Specially VST plugins.

What mic are you using and how do you connect it to the computer? Internal built-in mic? External mic? USB mic?

What options have you selected in Preferences -> Devices for Host, Playback and Recording?
Include as much details as you can in your post (Audacity version, Operating System, Equipment used, etc).
Please post your question in the appropriate forum (regarding audacity version and operating system).

I tried 3 times to go to Effects and uncheck everything there. Every time, the program froze until I ended it. Then I tried unchecking only "VST" under Enabled Effects and "Display VST effects in graphical mode" under VST Effects. Same result. If I don't uncheck anything, it does not freeze.

I am using a $25 Dynex USB microphone I got at Best Buy. As to settings, the Host is MME, the Playback Device is Microsoft Sound Mapper - Output, the recording device is Microphone (USB audio device), and it's set on Mono.

Thank you for your time!
