Very Poor Recording Quality

Post by bsult » Tue May 31, 2011 1:12 pm

I am new to Audacity but have another in the house that is very familiar with it. We are having difficulty figuring out how to get a decent recording quality. It is sometimes garbled and muffled. We are using a Technics turntable with excellent quality output to speakers to transfer some old vinyl albums. The albums are all cleaned prior to play. The headphone jack coming out of the RCA to USB converter is clear and lovely but the recording is awful. After I record the single stereo track I also noticed that the stereo track got out of sync in several places. I also need to know how to break the single track recording into individual namable tracks to put on a CD. I have read the manual but have not figured out how to make that happen.

Which is a what? Model numbers. You can't give us too much information.

It's a laptop, right? Does it have a built-in microphone for Skype or other recording?

We are taking the vinyl from a Technics turntable to a Dell Desktop Computer using an RCA to USB converter that came with the Audacity software. The USB is connected in the rear of the desktop. This is a souped up Dell even though it is several years old. It has a newer video card and plenty of RAM etc. Running Windows 7. We have no built in microphone on the desktop. The headphone from the RCA to USB connector device is a simple Coby stereo headphone and the sound is very clear on it. The sound on the speakers (Altec) is good as the recording is being done. When it is completed and played back it is lousy.
