issues with audacity on laptop + input via USB

Post by dabac » Sun May 29, 2011 7:43 pm

Hi all,

I'm trying to run audacity on a laptop w/o line-in or anything else useful. To get around this I've got a Terratec iVinyl thingy that mates the phono plugs to an USB port. However, it isn't smooth sailing:
1) I can't get any sound while recording. (playback is fine though)
2) Sample setting keeps resetting to 32-bit. when I fiddle around it insists on opening another track.

I do apologize if there is a FAQ / tutorial that covers this.

Cheers

That's normal. The default Quality setting in Audacity is 32-bit float as this offers highest quality audio processing.

That's probably normal too. If you need to cancel a recording, press Space to stop the recording, then Ctrl+Z to "undo" the recording.

OK, there was something there about driver interference and a suggested workaround. I'll try that tonight.

Noted. However, I'm doing this to get rid of my old stack of cassettes, and still keeping the material somewhat accessible in case nostalgia strikes me. A smaller data volume would be of more interest than the best possible audio.

How do I set samle parameters before starting a recording session?
Only way I've figured out is to start recording, which opens that window to the left on the screen. Can't change sample rate while recording. Can stop recording and set sample rate, which will revert once I start recording again.

Yeah, erasing recordings is something I've gotten real good at.

ANyhow, thanks and wish me luck!
