External sound problem

Post by mikelal » Sat May 28, 2011 5:30 pm

I am recording streaming sound on my laptop either from internet radio or youtube, successfully, however on playback I notice that audacity picks up (i.e. also records) any stray incidental external sound like a chair moving in the room, or a conversation not relevant to the recording.
How can I stop this happening ?
I have Windows Vista and am using the Audacity Beta version for Vista, but why should this cause a problem ?
Any help in resolving this problem will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you !

You need to turn off your microphone. Look in the Recording settings for your sound card (System Tray > Recording Devices).

Thanks, Steve, but do you mean "disable device" as there doesn't seem to be anything else to turn off the microphone. Presumably I should leave the other "internal microphone" still on ?

“internal microphone” is what you need to disable : microphones are not used to record from the internet … http://audacityteam.org/help/faq?s=reco ... =streaming
