audacity alpha freezes

few months back i had a problem using the mixing board in audacity as soon as i opened it or, soon after i did and used a setting it would freeze and thats it, have to close it out even if in the middle of a project. i was advised to use the alpha version it helped.
but while it doesnt freeze as much, it still does and for some, the individual track in the mixer, settings such as mute, solo, will not work on some songs i made. add to this, every time i open a .aud file i saved it freezes for some time before opening it up for me to use. the bigger the file the longer it takes. so when i open a file it does not show up instantly or soon, sometimes it takes well over 35 seconds before it will appear.
is there any fix for this, it is really annoying and does waste some of my projects, especially using the audacity mixing board, once thats frozen, forget it you have to close the program, and deal with orphan files etc.

also, the bets version was worse far as these problems, though i dont recall having such freezes upon opening any aud file, with the beta.

How big is your hard drive and how full? When was the last time you did error check and defragment?

Audacity will not work into a highly fragmented hard drive and a lot of software stops working right when the drive fills up.

the hard drive is new, i dont use it for anything but music, prob 7/8's of the drive is empty, frag, and error is not the prob. asked about this months ago they advised me to use alpha vers. and not beta. it helped but no real solution. hard drive is clean and lots of empty space.

Improvements seen in the alpha version should come through to the next beta release version. Keep an eye on the Audacity download page or sign up at the bottom of this page to be notified when 1.3.14 is released.

hope they come soon cause the constant freezing whether i use the mixer in aud. or not is annoying and never happened in previous versions like this.

Is that a typo or are you really opening .AUD files?
.AUD files are intended for Audacity's internal use, not as user files. The Audacity Project files have the file extension .AUP

it was a typo, theyre aup files. also when i use silence and get a little black line at the silence border, some of them, if i click it to remove crashes the whole program, if it didnt have a recovery i'd lose my work. if i reset will i lose my vst add ons? and am i clear that it says to remove everything but the specific file stated in those directions. i want to make sure i dont make any mistakes having not done this thing before. ive windows 7, the odd thing is i never ahd this problem on any other pc, but then, after the beta and alpha, i have not had aud. on any other pc to see it it would crash there too. ive tried reinstalling and everything. the longer the song - file the longer it takes to load yet my pc is clean, tons of hard drive space, dual core, 3 gb ram. one song i have is made up of 30 + tracks, it takes more than a minute to unfreeze after opening the file into aud. program. and the shorter songs, tracks take a while but not as long, typ[ically they open almost instantly on other pcs but that was about a yr ago, so i dont know as i have set aside a laptop soley for music, thus no clutter of other things and files. then the mixer if im not careful moving any lever will freeze and crash the program. each time i move a lever the meters on anything playing freeze, so i let it go and it catches up or crashes. makes for a lot of wasted time, and if it werent for recovery id lose tons of stuff.
