Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Audacity Back-Ward Version?

Post by dannyboy91uk » Wed May 18, 2011 1:03 pm

Hi community,

I have made a stupid mistake in believing that this version of Audacity would work on any system or any version, and I am now wondering whether there is anyway I can get this version of Audacity to work on the older versions? When I came to install Audacity at home about a month ago I never expected that the project I needed to create for college wouldn't actually work on the college systems due to the Audacity version being older. I have finished my audio project at home but on the beta version so when I tried to open the clip at college I was told to upgrade the version something you cannot do at college. I wasn't thinking about anything above when I installed the latest Audacity software and I would have expected that the version they use at my local college would have been atleast one of the latest versions, if not the beta.

Ideally I would not want to start again with the project so is there anyway I can open this file in 1.2.6 at the college? It's just I need this for proof, if it's not possible I will just have to start again and reinstall the Audacity 1.2.6 at home or do it at college.

You cannot open a 1.3.x project with 1.2.6.

What is the nature of your project? Does it have multiple tracks? Are you required to submit an Audacity project? Or can you submit the finished work (that is, exported to a WAV or MP3)?

If you need to submit an Audacity project, here is what you can do.

In your current 1.3.x project, export each track as a WAV file. To do this, select each track in turn and click on File > Export Selection. In the "Save as type" dropdown menu in the Export dialog, choose WAV. You will now have a WAV file for each track in your project. Note that if you used an envelope to adjust the volume on any track in the original project, or applied any Gain or Pan settings on any track, those settings will be applied on export - the volume of the exported WAV file will be adjusted according to the envelope, gain and pan settings. If part of your project specification was to use envelope, gain or pan settings, you will want to remove them before you export, then apply them when you import the WAV into the 1.2.6 project.

Download and install Audacity 1.2.6. Start Audacity 1.2.6 - a new empty project window will appear.

Click on Project > Import Audio and select the WAV files you exported from the 1.3.x project. Each file will be imported into a new track in the Audacity project window. You should now have your project back, although the tracks may not be in the same order. If any tracks in the original project were time-shifted to start at a time other than zero, you will need to shift them to the right position. A noted above, you will need to apply any envelopes, gain or pan settings to the imported tracks to match the settings in the original project.

You can do this in a single export. Just use File > Export Multiple and them check on the radio button that says "Tracks" in the box that says "Split files based on:".

How about putting Audacity 1.3.13 onto a USB stick as a "portable application" then you can run your project in Audacity 1.3.13 on any Windows 2000/XP/Vista/7 computer that has a USB socket.
To make Audacity 1.3.13 "portable":
1) Download the ZIP version of Audacity from here http://audacity.googlecode.com/files/au ... 1.3.13.zip
2) Extract the ZIP file onto a USB stick
3) Create an empty folder called "Portable Settings" on the USB stick in the same directory as the audacity.exe file.

(perhaps you could persuade the school to upgrade to Audacity 1.3.13?)

Cheers for the replies, in regards to what you were saying Bill it is multiple tracks and sound effects with Audacity tweak effects in a lot of the content I put into a project. Mean-while on the question you asked I don't think the exported audio clip would be suitable on it's own. I think the tutor will want the actual Audacity Project to see what I have used when it comes to marking. I do have an alternative plan though because I managed to transfer my entire Audacity Project and the side folders that the project contained onto the tutors USB pendrive, if he forgets to upgrade his Audacity on his own laptop or it wouldn't open though it would mean I would have to be rushing around panicking trying to hand my work over in a few weeks time for the moderator to check.

I will make sure to use both methods that you guys suggested by the way. If the tutor however does upgrade his Audacity and marks my work I guess this was all for nothing but I won't be taking that chance so it's time to do this few minute job.

Thank you again.
