Multiple Track Recording errors

So I've just downloaded this wonderful program, but I'm having trouble recording or overdubbing multiple tracks. After flawlessly recording a first track, and while recording the second track, the playback is distorted (choppy) and the second track records at a slower rate giving it a higher pitch. I should mention that I'm running 64bit Vista, and as I've read, memory could be a problem. However, I don't believe this is my issue because I'm running at 8GB of RAM. Is there a setting issue that I'm not aware of ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'll even consider some album credits...

How old is the computer and what's the processor? Audacity is something of a coal mine canary. Audio (and video) happen in real time. No waiting for processing or calculations. If there's no place to put that B-flat over middle-C data when it arrives, it goes in the trash can. And the canary falls over.

Overdubbing is especially troublesome because the computer has to play a stereo track in perfect order and real time and record a different track, also in real time and in perfect order.

Tall order when the computer is off calculating the next Windows Update.

When was the last time you defragmented the hard drive? How full is the drive? Do you have your Virus Protection turned off? you probably should. Disconnect the network and kill off (temporarily) the virus software.

Even more sinister -- did you put the memory in yourself? Did you check it? Audacity tends to eat memory like hot butterd popcorn and may be the only application that uses all the sticks.
