I enjoy using audacity 1.3 beta at home, very much. I have a question regarding the Volume Control Slider in front of the mic icon ( RECORD mode ). It is all the time greyed out and is set permanently at extreme right position. How can I activate it?

Please help.

You probably can't. The slider is only available if Audacity has proper control of the system input slider. Whether or not Audacity does have proper control depends on the version of Audacity, your operating system, the type of sound card that you are using and the sound card drivers. To take care of the first point, ensure that you have the latest version of Audacity (currently 1.3.13 http://audacityteam.org/download/ ) You can check which version you have by looking in "Help menu > About Audacity".

If you have Audacity 1.3.13 and still have the same issue, please say what your operating system is and the type of sound card that you are using and we'll be able to tell you how to proceed.

Thanks a lot for immediate inputs. The version here is audaicty ( beta ) 1.3.10
OS is Windows xp. Sound card is Realtek. Audio controller--HD audio
Audio driver version -- 5.10.0.5423 ( I do not know what this stands for )

There is another sub question in Recording...
Is it possible in Audacity that I play some music in the background, record a track through Audacity with a keyboard( synthesizer ) connected to LINE IN of sound card,BUT not record the background being played. If I select overdub option, I am able to listen as well as record the synth strokes, BUT the background also gets mixed in the SYNTH strokes.

I hope I have not made it too complicated. Basically, I want the background to be heard for guiding me but do not want it to get mixed in what has been played on the Synthesizer. Possible ?

You've probably not found it yet, but there's a bug in Audacity 1.3.10 which can cut off the end of tracks when you Export them. This has been fixed now so I would highly recommend that you update to Audacity 1.3.13. You can get it here and install it over the top of your current version: http://audacityteam.org/download/

Near the bottom of the "Transport" menu, "Overdub" should be enabled and "Software Playthrough" disabled. (it probably is, but please check).

Near the time/date in the lower right corner of the Desktop there should be an icon for your RealTek sound card. Open it up and look for the "Recording" settings. You need to select "Line" as the recording input (It's probably set to "Stereo Mix" or "Mix" or something like that).
