Duplicated track changes pitch

Post by uberkarr » Sat May 07, 2011 5:07 pm

Hello,

I am using version 1.3.13 (beta) on a Windows 7 Professional (64-bit) Dell Vostro 1520 laptop computer with the following configuration:

1) 4GB of RAM
2) Intel Dual Core [email protected]
3) Hitachi HTS723232L9A362 250GB 7,200RPM SATA Hard Drive with 121GB Free
4)IDT High Definition Audio CODEC with the following available formats:
4a) 2 channel, 16 bit, 44100 HZ (currently enabled)
4b) 2 channel, 16 bit, 48000 HZ
4c) 2 channel, 24 bit, 44100 HZ
4d) 2 channel, 24 bit, 48000 HZ

As an Audacity newbbie, I am currently experimenting with recording just my voice by using the internal IDT High Definition Audio CODEC microphone.

So, if I record a 30 second track of my voice and highlight the entire track and then go to the "Effects Meniu" and view the "Change Pitch" effect it shows that the pitch is "From B To B". However, if I select the track and duplicate it using the "Duplicate" command under the "Edit" menu and then view the "Change Pitch effect, Audacity shows that my voice is "From C TO: C".

What gives? It has me sratching my head.

You help and/or advice would be greatly appreciated. Other than that, I am very impressed with this software and can't wait until I understand it better and so I can start laying down some instrument tracks!

Thanks in advance! I very much look forward to your response.

~Chris

Changing pitch from B to B is exactly the same as changing pitch from C to C. That is, no change.

If you are pitch changing a single note, then it's quite useful that the pitch change effect tries to work out what the original note is. When changing the pitch of a longer section, or any sounds that don't have a distinct pitch, then the pitch change effect will not be able to accurately determine the original pitch (because there is not definite original pitch). However, it does not really matter that the calculation of the original pitch can be a bit erratic - the important part is the "interval" (how much the pitch is being changed). Whether the pitch change effect says "from C to C#" or "from D to D#", the effect is the same, which is that the pitch is being raised by one semitone (5.946%).
