Audacity Forum

Hello,

I have used Audacity for years and have loved it. I recently bought a new desktop system (the laptop gave up the ghost), and installed Audacity 1.3.7. After trying to record something one evening, I received the error message, "Error while opening sound device. Please check the input device settings and the project sample rate." after pushing the red record button. This lead to some exploration, and I discovered that the Preferences dialogue was blank, with no options for selecting my audio input device. I browsed the forum looking for a similar error, and the only thing I came up with was to update to the latest Beta version (1.3.13). Still didn't seem to fix it. Made sure my sound card drivers were up to date. Any clue what I need to do to get it right?

Is the Preferences dialog still blank in 1.3.13?

In 1.3.13 you can also enable the Devices Toolbar and change the devices from the main window. To do this go to View menu -> Toolbars -> Devices toolbar

Audacity can only "see" recording/playback devices that are enabled in Windows.

Check in the Windows Control Panel to see if your computer has a recording device enabled (see here: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Mixer ... trol_Panel )

@bgravato: Yes, it is still blank in 1.3.13. Devices Toolbar was active, and pulled down a blank list as well.

@Steve: I have both a "Line In" and "Mic" inputs, both of which are enabled and have the latest drivers.

So what's plugged into those inputs? What are you trying to record from?
(If they say "not plugged in", then they are not available for recording)

I think that seems to fix it. I can record once I have a mic plugged in, because Audacity recognizes my sound card's inputs. Oddly enough though, it is really finicky about playback if I unplug the headphone/mic set to make it play from my speakers. I have to leave the headphones in, and then change the output to the one that the speakers are plugged into. Strange.
