ZOOM H1 AS EXTERNAL MIC WITH AUDACITY

Post by zbiggs » Tue May 03, 2011 1:41 pm

I am trying to use the Zoom H1 with Audacity as an external Mic.

well, my problem is more about syncing up the tracks.

I am looking to record 2 tracks - 1 rhythm and 1 lead

what I do now is open up a click track in audacity > record the rhythm track on ZOOM H1 > load in audacity

here is where the problem occurs. I can record the lead track in the ZOOM H1 while listening to the rhythm track in Audacity, but after I load the Lead track into audacity I have to try and line up the rhythm and lead manually so that they are synced up.

Is there a way to record directly onto audacity using the ZOOM H1 so that the tracks are timed right?

OR - is there a way to sync up 2 tracks if they are recorded in the ZOOM H1 so that they sync up in Audacity??

I would appreciate any feedback on this.

Sure, just not in Audacity 1.2. Audacity 1.3 has latency delay adjustments.

Audacity 1.2 is very old and no longer supported,
patched, corrected, or updated. Audacity 1.2 can
be unstable on newer computers.

Download and install the latest Audacity 1.3 from here...

http://audacityteam.org/download/

You can install both audacity 1.2 and Audacity 1.3 on
the same computer, but only use one at a time.

Audacity 1.2 will not open projects made on Audacity 1.3.

If you use MP3 or some of the more modern audio
compression formats, get Lame and FFMpeg software
from the same web site. Do not use older software
or software from other web sites, even though they
may have the same names.

thanks for the response. I should have clarified -

I am using version 1.3

This is not a latency issue as I am not recording directly on to the computer - I am importing the tracks from the ZOOM H1

as it is now - I have to use the time shift option to move my Lead track over the Peak of the Click track to match it up.

This works to a certain degree but will always be a little off due to human error - there is no way i can move my track to the exact part of the beat that I actually played it on.

after looking around at other sync problem forums it seems like the "time shift" function is the only way to sync in audacity...I guess I was looking for a tool that would "snap" the track to the beat

You posted in the 1.2.x section of the forum... I'll move it to the 1.3.x part of the forum...

Can the H1 record directly to the computer? Check the manual of the recorder, does it state anywhere it can be used as a mic only and not a recorder? Maybe it can't...

If you're recording one track on the recorder while playing another one in the computer, there's no way to automatically sync both, except using the time shift tool like you're currently doing... Zoom in if you need finer tunning...
Include as much details as you can in your post (Audacity version, Operating System, Equipment used, etc).
Please post your question in the appropriate forum (regarding audacity version and operating system).
