Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Opening a *.WAV file

Post by Nisko » Mon May 02, 2011 7:35 pm

I have a wav file (added to this post) and Audacity says it doesn't recognize it. Audacity says to try importing it as a RAW file. I did that but it imported a file that sounds nothing like it should (but I was able to add 1 second of dead space at the beginning of the file which is the end result I'm trying to achieve). Can somebody help me? This is the first time I've ever tried to use Audacity. Thank you............

I had no problem opening your file--sounds kinda like an electric clarinet--bee-doooo. I added one second to the front and attched it to this...

What seems weird is your original file is ~1.4 seconds long and ~29kB in size; adding 1 second of silence created a file ~433 kB in size!

Thank you - that's exactly what I wanted. Why do you think I couldn't open it?

What does that mean? Can't Audacity open an MP3 file?

Also, why could another responder open it - and I couldn't?

I believe audacity relies on the file extension to recognize the file format... The file has .wav extension, audacity expects a wav format, which is not...

Try change the file extension to .mp3 and import it again. Does that work?
Include as much details as you can in your post (Audacity version, Operating System, Equipment used, etc).
Please post your question in the appropriate forum (regarding audacity version and operating system).

Actually, I opened and played the file the other responder opened, modified by adding 1 second. It has a wav extension and it plays just like what I wanted. I'm more confused than ever.
