all of a sudden audacity stopped working for me.
I tried to figure out why. And the only thing I could come up with was that I had updated windows ie (even though I am not sure why I even keep it on my computer since I use firefox)
so i went to the audacity site.
updated audacity to 1.3 beta. still not working.
the output device I put on: usb audio
the input: soundmax digital. (mono) it's just not recording....
any help would be sooo appreciated...thanks!!!

I'm pretty sure you don't want soundmax (digital) as the input...
What are you trying to record from?

lol.
you can see that I know very little. almost dangerous to even have me looking at this.
I only use audacity to record videos or music that plays on my computer...so really just through the sound mechanisms that come with the computer.
thank you so much for your help!

You're probably looking for an option with the name "Stereo Mix". Not all sound cards have it available on recent windows... But since you were able to do it in the past it should still be available. So in the recording device select "Stereo Mix".
If that doesn't work have a look at this tutorial and see if it helps:

Or this:

thank you so much ...I tried what you suggested and the input was already on soundmax audio: stereo mix...which didn't work ..>I changed that, after reading your link, to microsoft sound mapper....
didn't work.
I'm stumped. while I updated internet explorer (I believe this was the source of my problems) I actually use firefox and my os is windows xp (it's older) could any of these things be creating problems?

I don't think an IE update by itself could mess that up, but sometimes updating something in windows can do other things "under the table" that one is not told about...
I'm not a windows user, so I can't help any further on this... lets wait for one of the windows elves to pop up and share some new ideas...

BTW, you mentioned something about an usb device as the output... what is that? usb headset? If the output sound is going to an external device then the internal sound card probably won't be able to capture it...
So either pick stereo mix for the usb device if available, or set the soundmax soundcard as the output device for your audio...

I see your point.
you see I have protools on my computer.
it's really just to hold some files that engineers have mixed.
that's prob why that's popping up.
but I can't use it to record from the computer...you've been great. thank you so much
