two .aup files will not load

Two .aup files were created, then failed to load several days later. (That is, after opening manually one .aup file, nothing happens except the name of the file to be opened is displayed in the top of the window.) Can anything be done about it? I doubt it, but I still have the old version 1.26 .aup files they were created from. It's not a big deal, but there's this problem in two .aup files.
BTW, the 1.26 .aup files were saved as 1.35 .aup files. Now two 1.35 files won't load.

"Audacity Projects" are made of two parts:
filename.aup is the Audaciy Project file
filename_data is a folder that contains data for the audacity project.
Audacity requires both the AUP file and the data to be available.
Audacity 1.2.x files can be opened in Audacity 1.3.x
Audacity 1.3.x files cannot be opened in Audacity 1.2.x

At least two. If you play your card right and have a complicated show, it also includes sound clips from all over your machine. An Audacity Project first becomes one single sound file you can email to your mum when you Export As WAV or Export As MP3 or some other format.
It is strongly recommended that you Export As WAV any time you have something valuable as a safety backup. If it's really valuable, copy the WAV file and put the copy somewhere safe. Audacity Projects are brittle and easily damaged.
You can open up your AUP file in WordPad and read it.

You are, by the way, officially neat and orderly. Only the people who "clean up" a lot get burned with this. They clean up files that they don't realize are part of the project. My messy friends and I never have this problem.

Both the data and folders are available. I did not mess around with anything except opening/closing project files and changing the filename of one file. Would it be necessary for the folder names and project filenames to be of the same name?

There are specific file and folder names burned into the AUP file (did you open that one up and look at it?). Audacity will blindly follow those instructions. If you change anything, the Project turns to dust.

If you can change the names back to the original file names (it must be exactly right), you
may be able to turn the dust back into an Audacity project. I say "may" because if you have attempted to open the incorrectly named file/folder with Audacity, Audacity may have changed some of the data and/or information in the .aup file which will then mess up any recovery attempt.
Moral of the story - do not make
any manual changes until you have your audio safely exported as a wav file.
(we've all made this mistake once).

All right. Doesn't matter much anyway; I still have the identical 1.26 aup files. I've reworked them and saved them as 1.35 aups. Gonna delete the bad files, now.
