Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

To give a reasonable answer we will need more information. First, choose the menu item Help > About and tell us exactly which version of Audacity you have (there is no 3.1; my guess is you have 1.3.13 beta if you recently downloaded Audacity--if not that is the version you need for Win7--to get it look here:
http://forum.audacityteam.org/viewtopic ... 16&t=55295 ).

Next we need to know what you are trying to record and how you are recording (are you using two mics, recording "what you hear" etc.). We will also need to know the details of your hardware--what sound card (have you gotten the latest drivers) and any other sound hardware.

We also will need some specifics about your Windows install-- is that 7 Pro, 7 Home, have you installed SP1 (if not do so) etc.?

If you start Audacity and choose Help > Audio Device Info... a dialog will open; press <CTRL + a> to select all then press <CTRL + c> to copy then insert it here using the "Code" button at the top of your reply--a tiny part of mine looks like:

First off, Michael, the "Overdub" was on, and as far as clicking right and left on the audio track, that didn't do anything.
Edjar, I have Windows 7 home. I have 1.3.13. I am recording riffs to a WAV, single mic. My sound card is a "Audiophile". All this other stuff is beyond my comprehension...!

"SP1" is "Service Pack 1"
Every now and then Microsoft will release a large bundle of bug fixes and updates for Windows. This "bundle" is called a "Service Pack".

If you are recording a single microphone, then that is a mono device - it only produces a mono signal.
The correct way to record that is to set Audacity to record in mono.
To do that, go to "Edit menu > Preferences > Devices" and select "Channels: 1 (mono)".
The mono track will play through both left and right speakers when you play it back.
