Importing from my hard drive

So I downloaded audacity last night and was trying to play with it and figure it all out, but I can't even get to the starting point!
When I try to import an mp3 from my hard drive, it does it just like on the tutoral videos I watched, but when I go to play it back, it looks and sounds like it is playing the entire song in 2-3 seconds.
Do I have something set up wrong?

Thanks

That wasn't an MP3. That was Some Other Sound Format that Audacity doesn't understand.

You can fix that by installing the FFMpeg software from here...

http://audacityteam.org/download/

Which is where you should have gotten your Audacity. The 1.3 Audacity, Lame, and FFMpeg travel as a customized team. You should also install Lame if you ever need to Export an MP3 file. Audacity will not do that by itself.

Just a note that Audacity does not edit MP3 files. It converts the music to an internal format and then makes you Export a fresh new MP3. This doubles the compression damage. If you have borderline quality MP3 files, they might not survive the process.
