Does the Tascam device (what Tascam device?) appear as an available recording device in the Sounds section of the Windows Control Panel?
Is it selected in the Windows Control Panel as the default recording device?
What sample rate and what bit-depth are you using on the Tascam?

In the "devices & printers" control panel the Tascam US-122mkII is noted as "unspecified"...in Hardware & Sound the device is noted as "default device...properties are noted thusly 16 bit 44100 Hz(CD quality) Should I change this property to "studio quality"?

Keep it on CD Quality for now.

Connect the Tascam to your computer and allow Windows a few moments to connect to it,
then open Audacity, (IMPORTANT! The Tascam must be connected to the computer and recognised by Windows BEFORE you open Audacity.)
then go to "Edit menu > Preferences > Devices".
Set the Recording setting to the USB option
Set the Playback setting to the USB option if you are also using the Tascam as the playback device, or set it to your normal sound card if you are listening to playback directly from your computer.
Go to the "Quality" tab in Preferences and check that "Default Sample Rate" is 44100 Hz and "Default Sample Format is "32-bit float".

You should now be ready to go.

Thanks for your help...I think I was opening Audacity before I put the Tascam in. I've still have some learning to do with this but should be okay.
