Your system could have sailing just on the good side of failure. Anything evil, like delicate corrosion of the USB connector, drying out electrolytic capacitors, computer power supply getting "tired," Humidity going up. Anything at all could tip you over the edge. 5v is not a lot to work with and it has killed more than one "Convenient" external USB product.
