Amplitude above zero when starting

Post by bgaddis96 » Mon Apr 11, 2011 2:47 am

I have Windows 7 so I'm not sure if this is just a bug or not but when I start recording, the amplitude on the currently recording track starts out above 0. Even if I stop the recording lower the line in level and start it again it still starts well above. The only way I have gotten it to move is to adjust the line level slider as the track is being recorded. If there is any help to be had that would be great.

It looks to me as though you have a bad case of DC-offset - usually a fault with your soundcard. You can use Audacity's Normalize coommand to remove this - do this as your first edit after capture and before any other editing - see: http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/Normalize

But you would probably either be better off replacing your soundcard or using an external USB soundcard - as there is a lot of DC on your signal.

There's been a couple of cases where bad DC off-set like that has been caused by buggy sound card drivers. It may be worth checking if there are any updated sound card drivers available for your computer. (see here: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Updat ... ce_Drivers )
