I am trying to record with my microphone... I went to sound and enabled the microphone in control panel (screen1.jpg), then I told my soundcard what jack and device was connected to that jack (screen2.jpg) and that is what I always have done and never had a problem. I have been using Windows 7 and this soundcard for a year now and used audacity quite frequently the whole time, but this last two weeks, it works no more, i get "error while opening sound device" and "no devices found" in preferences... as you see in screen.jpg my soundcard claims that microphone is not plugged in, but it is and i can hear my voice in the computer speakers when I talk or make noise... I don't know if the "not plugged in" bug/problem is what is causing Audacity to not work.. any ideas?

I'd guess that is almost certainly the problem. If Windows does not recognise that there is a microphone (even if there is one) then it will not be available to Audacity.

The first thing to check is the microphone plug and lead and check that it is plugged in securely. If the computer has more than one microphone input, try the other input. If available, try another microphone.

Another possibility is that Windows may have updated the sound card drivers to new ones that don't work. You can test this by following this procedure to roll back the sound card drivers: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/windows7/ ... dows-7.htm

Have you tried these suggestions?

it is securely in the microphone slot (only 1 microphone slot exists) & roll back driver is grayed out... but this needing to restart for soundcard to recognize it still persists... and only has been doing this since the date of this original thread... (the day before that & prior was all fine)

I've got a good idea of what the problem is, but I'm not sure where the relevant setting will be or exactly what it will be called. Could you post a screenshot of the "Advanced" tab of that first image.

sorry i took so long to post the screenshot... I have been sooooooooo busy the last few days, still busy, so I won't know when I can come back... (stopped what I was in the middle of, to post this, just because it crossed my mind)

The setting I'm looking for isn't there.
What we're looking for is something like "Allow Reconfiguration Pop-Ups"

Go to control panel and see if there is a Sigmatel Audio icon.
If there is, look there for an option to allow (Re-)Configuration Pop-Ups.

If you find it, please let us know exactly what it's called and where exactly the setting is (I've not got a Sigmatel, or Windows 7, so I don't know exactly where the setting will be).
