Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

No drag & drop in Windows Seven 32 bit

Post by MilesAhead » Tue Apr 05, 2011 11:43 pm

Attempting to drag & drop any audio file on Audacity 1.3 beta, both the previous and the latest, I get the circle with the line through it. Audacity 1.2 works as expected.

I tried 1.3 beta first, with no audacity 1.2 installed. No drag & drop. So 1.3's refusal to drag & drop seems unrelated to 1.2 being installed or not.

Drag 'n' Drop can have different meanings and works slightly different on XP as compared to Win7 (for some of the D 'n' Ds).
1) You can drag an audio file's real icon onto an open Project window.
2) You can drag an audio the file's real icon onto the Audacity app's icon.
3) You can drag a shortcut to an audio file's real icon onto an open Project window.
4) You can drag a shortcut to an audio file's real icon onto the Audacity app's icon.
5) You can drag an Audacity project's real icon onto an open Project window.
6) You can drag an Audacity project's real icon onto the Audacity app's icon.
7) You can drag a shortcut to an Audacity project's real icon onto an open Project window.
8) You can drag a shortcut to an Audacity project's real icon onto the Audacity app's icon.

Some of the above work in XP but not Win7. Some do not work on any Windows OS but do on other platforms. Some work on all OSes.

Considering the above, give us more info -- let us know which version of 1.3 you are using (there is a 1.3.13 beta release candidate 2 around which is the most current as of today), which OS and which operation you are trying to D 'n' D.

I don't see that it's XP vs W7 when the stable release will drag & drop on Windows 7 and Beta RC2(which is the latest as I specified) will not.

In both cases I double click the program icon to start Audacity. I can drag a .wav or other audio file onto 1.2 but not 1.3, taking no other action other than opening the program and dragging a file onto to it as would be done in any editor. Don't know how to express it more simply than that. 1.2 yes, beta rc 2 no.

Sorry if I got off on the wrong foot with my previous post. As you can see, drag 'n' drop might mean many things and until you told me exactly "what and how" I could not tell if it was a "bug" or a "missing feature". The drag 'n' drop situation may well have changed from 1.2 to 1.3.13 rc2 (I am not familiar with 1.2). I also had no way to determine what "latest" meant in relation to your original post.

Anyway, dragging a WAV file's real icon (not a shortcut--shortcuts won't work in Win7) into the dark gray track panel does work on 1.3.13rc2 (here and for all the alpha-testers). If you try to drop the icon anywhere else in the Project window you will see the "slashed circle" no-no. If you are seeing something else we need to pin down why!

"rc" means "release candidate" and the Developers already know that rc2 has problems that require an rc3 (but they do not involve drag 'n' drop failure). I would suggest trying this first -- rename your Audacity configuration file; it is here:

Code: Select all

C:Users<user name>AppDataRoamingAudacity
replace <user name> with your user's name, it is called audacity.cfg

See if the problem persists, if so download rc2 again (or just grab the current nightly):
http://wiki.audacityteam.org/index.php? ... s_Binaries

if the problem persists open the Log (menu Help > Show Log...) right-click for the context menu, choose Select All and copy ',' paste the log here.

Not at all. I think I was taken aback a bit because I never saw such an analysis of drag & drop permutations. :)

It's working now. What I did was remove 1.2 and all settings such as Audacity roaming folder. Also removed "Lame for Audacity" and downloaded alpha portable.

Thnaks for fixing me up. :)

edit: btw I deleted the alpha and copied rc2 portable into the folder and d & d still works. It must have had to do with the settings as you mentioned. I must have had audacity 1.2 on in the past and the settings folder was left over.

Thanks for sticking with me on this! I am glad that you got the problem resolved. As a programmer (but not really part of the Audacity Team) I sometimes get quite specific in my details and often overwhelm the general user <grin>. I am glad you brought the problem up instead of just giving up on a fine program.
