Cannot drag *.avi video (with MP3 audi track) on v1.3.12?

I tried to drag an *.avi video with MP3 audio track onto Audacity v1.3.12 but a popup appears telling me:

"Audacity recognizes the type of the file "D:....
Importers supposedly supporting such files are:
FFmpeg-compatible files
but none of them understood this file format."

Hmm, when I drag the save *.avi onto v1.2.6 everything works fine.

Why?

Did Audacity cut the features back?

Do you have FFMpeg installed and does your machine recognize it? In the case of Audacity 1.3, you have to get the specific FFMpeg from the same web site that was designed for it. You can't use the old FFMpeg software.

That's bizarre. Audacity 1.2.6 does not support video files. Are you sure that the files really are .avi format and not some other format with the wrong extension?

Ok, I revoke my statement about v1.2.6. It does not work in any version completely (it seemed to start loading only).

From your comments I understand that if I use/install ffmpeg then Audacity CAN load *.avi video files with MP3 audio tracks.
Is this correct?

Ok, so I downloaded and extracted ffmpeg from this page:
http://www.videohelp.com/tools/ffmpeg

Its a cmdline tool ffmpeg.exe. Where (in which sub-folder of Audacity) should I put ffmpeg.exe in order to enable Audacity for *.avi reading?

That's not the right version for Audacity.
See here for installing FFMpeg for Audacity: http://manual.audacityteam.org/index.ph ... tallffmpeg
