echo

Post by Shmeinak » Sun Apr 03, 2011 11:39 am

This morning I closed a ?file? while it was recording from my tape. (There was a lot of noise that sounded the same as the noise you get when you put the sound too loud on older machines). (I tried noise reduction, but I guess I have to set different parameters because it didn't work too well)
When I tried to restart the recording my very original problem started again. That is that there is an echo.
I tried to go back to regedit to reset the key for audacity again (I was previously having a different problem), but now I can't find it anywhere.

This is a great program -- I feel like such a dummy having so many problems with it.

How is your tape machine connected to the computer?
Which version of Windows?

It is connected from the earphone jack out to the line in on the computer
Running XP pro
I had transferred a few tapes successfully. It was just when I hit stop in middle of the recording that this started happening.
I am guessing that it is just a setting that I need to change, but I can't find the key in my regedit HKEY_CURRENT_USER >SOFTWARE

I's always scary when someone's first reaction to a problem is to head straight for the Registry Editor.

Do you like to record internet audio (YouTube, etc). You need to turn that off when you make a "straight" recording or the computer will record the show twice, once direct and once again through the playback system. If your moons and stars line up, you can get double volume which could give you the overload you're experiencing.

Follow these instructions backwards.

If you leave the microphone running by accident, you can get multiple sound pathways and echoes. Live recording should be monitored with headphones in addition to picking the right device to record from.

I never record from the internet onto Audacity -- all of my recording is from my tape recorder to the 'line in'
Don't worry, I don't usually run to the registry.
I was just on a different thread here a couple of weeks ago because (I had forgotten that the echo was my original problem) and it started recording only on one 'line'.
The fix there was in that registry entry, so I wanted to fix it again there....
